Johnny Cash — Ring of Fire
To get your week started off in the right way, watch this video now.
To me, Cash represented the best of American music and this performance goes a long way in explaining why. In Cash, you have a guy who just oozes cool (and in the case of this video, during a time before cool existed), understood the potential of “fusion” in music (I’m hearing blues, rock, and country influences combined with some mariachis in this song), had a beautiful voice, and a strong sense of social justice. Lyrics from the song “Man in Black:”
I wear it for the sick and lonely old, For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold, I wear the black in mournin’ for the lives that could have been, Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.
“Ring of Fire” (the song posted here) is not political or preachy; it’s just damn fun!
Johnny, we miss you.
