Dennis Kucinich is dropping out:
CLEVELAND (AP) — Democrat Dennis Kucinich is abandoning his second, long-shot bid for the White House as he faces a tough fight to hold onto his other job — U.S. congressman.
In an interview with Cleveland’s Plain Dealer, the six-term House member said he was quitting the race and would make a formal announcement on Friday.
“I will be announcing that I’m transitioning out of the presidential campaign,” Kucinich said. “I’m making that announcement tomorrow about a new direction.”
People have made a lot of jokes about Kucinich. Maybe he looks like an elf. Maybe the “Department of Peace” is a bad idea. Maybe his wife Elizabeth is thought to be too sexy for Dennis.
But the fact of the matter is that Dennis has provided a wonderful voice of conscience to the Democratic race. He is more anti-war than any of the major candidates and was the only one to vote against the Iraq war. He is in favor of a single-payer health care system, and he supports full marriage rights for everyone.
When it comes down to it, Kucinich best represented the Democratic base on policy positions.
Unfortunately, Democrats are like battered spouses who are afraid to act on what they really think. Instead, we tend to flock to the candidates that the media and “conventional wisdom” think are electable. I’m guilty of that syndrome as well.
Dennis, I’m sorry to see you leave the race, but I hope that you will continue to fight for peace and social justice.
