The Real Bigotry Against Obama

I haven’t heard a lot of people saying that Obama shouldn’t be president because he’s black.

Sure, there were the 25% of Ohio voters who said that race was an important factor in their vote who overwhelmingly chose Hillary, but the kind of bigots who wouldn’t vote for Obama because of his ethnicity at least know better than to spout such nonsense in public. Most of them would probably never vote for a Democrat anyway.

The real problem is the meme that Barack is a secret-Muslim

We’ve all probably seen those e-mails that lie about Obama’s religion and we know how pathetic it is that line of attack is, but we also know that it might have an effect among some voters.

Kristof nails the issue:

The whispering campaigns allege that Mr. Obama is a secret Muslim planning to impose Islamic law on the country. Incredibly, he is even accused — in earnest! — of being the Antichrist.

Proponents of this theory offer detailed theological explanations for why he is the Antichrist, and the proof is that he claims to be Christian — after all, the Antichrist would say that, wouldn’t he? The rumors circulate enough that Glenn Beck of CNN asked the Rev. John Hagee, a conservative evangelical, what the odds are that Mr. Obama is the Antichrist.

That’s why Clinton’s leak of the photo of Obama in Somali dress was such an outrage. It’s also why when Clinton said that Obama isn’t a Muslim, “as far as I know” was met with such outrage from Obama supporters.

If Obama gets the nomination, he’s going to have to deal with this shit 10 times more than he is now — Clinton shouldn’t be feeding into the ‘whisper campaign.”

  1. The comments made over the weekend by Rep. Steve King (R – Asshat) are but the latest illustration of the point you raise. The Clinton campaign is complicit in this type of veiled racism.

But the Clintons, never ones to get left on the sidelines in the sleaze throwing, have not only covered the Muslim angle, but also the African-American angle with the former President’s disgusting comments in South Carolina.

How much do you think Toni Morrison would like to have back that “first Black President” nonsense?

  2. I’m sure Morrison would really like to take back that “first black president” shit about Clinton, especially considering her endorsement of Obama earlier this year.

    So embarrassing.
