Carl Bernstein’s Thoughts on a Hillary Clinton Presidency

From CNN:

What will a Hillary Clinton presidency look like?

The answer by now seems obvious: It will look like her presidential campaign, which in turn looks increasingly like the first Clinton presidency.

Which is to say, high-minded ideals, lowered execution, half truths, outright lies (and imaginary flights), take-no prisoners politics, some very good policy ideas, a presidential spouse given to wallowing in anger and self-pity, and a succession of aides and surrogates pushed under the bus when things don’t go right. Which is to say, often.

It’s hard to imagine that someone who has run her campaign as badly as she has would turn around and become a great president. I blogged about this issue here.

  1. It really is kind of a replay, isn’t it? Even this latest episode with Mark Penn is reminiscent of the Clinton presidency. Mark Penn, obviously, has serious ethical problems, yet Senator Clinton can’t bring herself to cut their ties entirely. President Clinton had Dick Morris, who was revealed to be a frequent patron of prostitutes, and still Clinton couldn’t completely cut the cord.

  2. Yeah, there really is a pattern among those two in the loyalty and incompetence areas.

But Bill was an OK president who ran a brilliant campaign. We don’t know what kind of president Hillary might be (I hope we don’t have to find out), but her campaign doesn’t maker her presidency look all that promising.
