Why Does Bush Hate Thomas Jefferson?

What Bush said:

Thomas Jefferson understood that these rights do not belong to Americans alone. They belong to all mankind. And he looked to the day when all people could secure them. On the 50th anniversary of America’s independence, Thomas Jefferson passed away. But before leaving this world, he explained that the principles of the Declaration of Independence were universal. In one of the final letters of his life, he wrote, “May it be to the world, what I believe it will be — to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all — the Signal of arousing men to burst the chains, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government.”

What Jefferson said:

May it be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all,) the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government.

I agree with Jefferson on the monkish ignorance and superstition part. Apparently, Bush doesn’t.

  1. “Why Does Bush Hate Thomas Jefferson?”

Simple. Jefferson was pretty staunchly in favor of liberty. Bush is… well, you fill in the blank.

  2. Let’s take an a crack at this question:

Thomas Jefferson is one of the people responsible for that pesky little document that keeps him from doing what he darn well pleases.

  3. The whole ignorance thing probably hits a little too close to home for him. I’ve found that intellectually incurious people (and just the all-out stupid) who manage to enjoy some success are often very aware of their shortcomings.

They usually get smarmy, smug and retreat into their own tiny worlds, as has Bush.

  4. Tom, you nailed it.

  5. Terrant, your response goes back to Tom’s. How Bush must really hate Thomas Jefferson and the documents he wrote. Too bad for Bush that our nation was built upon Jefferson’s documents.

  6. GB, yeah, that kind of aggressive ignorance that gets in your face because they don’t know certain things.

They can be so fucking smug about their ignorance.
